Getting a road-kit together. Is this stuff ok for a carry-on? I can get by on a couple pairs of jeans and some coffee on the road. would be nice to not have to check a bag. also planning on bringing a lithium-ion booster pack ( very small), a pair of channel-locks, line pliers, and a few other generally useful things. socket sets can be had cheaply, so can various lengths of wire. (and twine, and marettes, and bubble gum and boogers) As a resourceful person, who is mature and has his own keys and credit cards, I should be able to climb every mountain and ford every stream with just a tool roll shouldn’t I?

Tools longer than 7 inches are banned from carry-on. Even for shorter tools, I wouldn’t bet on TSA agents knowing their policies correctly.

All the best tools are longer than 7 inches though. Next thing you’re gonna tell me is that you can’t even do a J in the airport to get yer mellow on.

Wow. I’ve never actually read the whole thing. I’m kind of frightened at some of the things you ARE allowed to fly with.

Every time I’ve checked a bag with tools mixed in with clothes, my bags have been searched.

Just FYI.

They’ve checked the pliers I carry several times. If I were you, I’d pack my tools in a checked bag. It’s a pain to check a bag, but at least you’d have the tools you need!

If it’s an option, you might be better shipping your tools ahead to the seller’s house. Otherwise, a trip to Harbor Frieght wherever you’re departing from may be a smarter move than trying to bring all that on a plane.

Is there a harbor freight or something similar nearby where the Corvair is?

Hell with a checked bag bring all the tools you can up to the weight limit!

she sure said that. Then she lit a cigarrette beforehand, so it would be ready when I was done.

should be, I’m not planning to wrench on this car, just get in and go. I however, am not stupid and I’m taking my lucky screwdriver.

No time for that. trying to leave sunday. I have one remaining super important commitment. (cub scout car rally) which I would not miss for one million convertibles.

Overnight them. Still cheaper than checking a bag.

on a side note: Thanks for being a shop teacher. I got to go to prep school where you wear a tie and go on to become a banker. As kind of a hippie, I did not become a banker. It took me 20 years to teach myself what a good shop teacher could have learned me in four. We need kids to know which end of a hammer you pick up.

Thanks! I really appreciate that.

One of the things people usually miss out when they go to private school, is stuff like shop classes. Very few private schools have any of them.

I think you’ve got the right idea for tools. Channel locks, vice grips, 4in1 screw driver, wire strippers, a couple sizes of crescent wrench, bailing wire, zip ties, electrical tape. The lithium ion booster pack is a good idea (I need to get one of those).
